Jimmy Rollins turning back the clock in White Sox camp
Jimmy Rollins is 37, but a rival scout watching him in the Cactus League says, "He's playing like he's 28."
"Jimmy's been great for us on the field and in the clubhouse," White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said Friday.
Rollins, in camp on a minor-league contract, has not locked down the White Sox's everyday shortstop job; his competition, Tyler Saladino, also is performing well.
If both shortstops keep this up, manager Robin Ventura could enter the season with more depth and flexibility at the position; Rollins is a switch-hitter, while Saladino bats right-handed.
Rollins does not have an "out" in his contract, according to a major-league source; he is competing for both the utility job and a chance to be the regular at short.
Rollins entered Friday 4-for-11 with a homer and four RBIs, then hit his second homer of the spring. Saladino entered Friday 2-for-11 with two homers and three RBIs.
