Innovative Pirates always tracking player movements
Every team track how often a player plays, but what sets the Pittsburgh Pirates apart is that they track how often a player runs.
"Every step they take, we keep track of. All the activity," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle told Pirates.com. "You keep those numbers, and when they start going the wrong way, you bring them in and tell them it might be time to back off."
Hurdle notes that the Pirates don't necessarily track every step a player takes, but that assumption wouldn't be too far off.
"We may not count the steps as they start to walk out to their positions, but when they start to run, yes," Hurdle said.
So who interprets this data and what do they do with it all?
Well those responsibilities fall on Brendon Huttman, the strength and conditioning coach, who reports to Hurdle on a weekly basis.
"Brendon tracks it," Hurdle said. " [He] comes in and says, 'Hey, this is my perspective: This guy's been on his feet, he's done a lot of work, you may want to look for an opportunity to give him a break.' I get a weekly printout from him."
