Home plate umpire plunks Cincinnati Reds pitcher

Published Jun. 26, 2016 11:09 a.m. ET

Home plate umpire Tom Hallion accidentally hit Cincinnati Reds pitcher Brandon Finnegan with a ball Saturday in the first inning of a game against the Padres on Pete Rose's big Hall of Fame day. Finnegan tossed a ball in the dirt that had to be removed from play, and as he wandered off the rubber, Hallion tossed a fresh baseball to the pitcher - who had no idea it was coming.

Finnegan would go on to allow three runs in 6.2 innings, but the Reds were shut out by the Padres and lost 3-0.
