Granderson injured before Yanks game

Yankees center fielder Curtis Granderson suffered an oblique strain Tuesday and his status for Opening Day is in jeopardy.

Granderson suffered the injury during batting practice before the Yankees played a spring training game at the Orioles' Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Fla. The team said Granderson, who has been having a stellar spring, was being evaluated and did not specify the extent of the injury.

A prolonged injury to Granderson could land him on the disabled list to start the season and cause manager Joe Girardi to shuffle his outfield.

Brett Gardner, who some believe is a better center fielder than Granderson, would move from left to center. But after that the situation would be up in the air.

Veteran Andruw Jones was signed to play left field against lefties, and did not play an everyday role with the White Sox last season.

A year ago the 33-year-old batted just .219 (42-for-192) with 11 homers and 25 RBIs against right-handed pitchers.

The Yankees open the regular season at home against the Tigers on March 31.
