Giants' Vogelsong starting second half in the bullpen
The return of Matt Cain and Jake Peavy to the Giants’ rotation shortly before the All-Star break necessitated the move of a couple of pitchers out of the rotation. An injury to Tim Lincecum (as well as his general ineffectiveness) made the decision to move him out relatively easy. Tim Hudson was also placed on the DL.
Now that Hudson is back though, Ryan Vogelsong has been moved into the bullpen.
There’s a chance he might make his way back to rotation at some point though. Per MLB.com, Bruce Bochy said:
"He was there [in the bullpen] to start the season. I just need him to be a little patient there for us."
Hudson, who just turned 40 over the break, is apparently recovered from what he called "old-itis" of his right shoulder. If his shoulder is ailing or needs extra rest later this season, it stands to reason that Vogelsong would be the first choice to replace him. Hudson is set to face the Padres in San Diego on Monday.
