Flashback: Right-hander Schilling joins 3,000-strikeout club

Perhaps more famous for bloody socks and his other postseason heroics during his playing career, Curt Schilling pitched his way into the record books on this date, Aug. 30, in 2006.

After allowing a leadoff double to the Oakland A's Jason Kendall in the first inning, Schilling struck out Nick Swisher to become the 14th pitcher in major-league history to reach the 3,000-strikeout plateau.

It was an otherwise forgettable outing for Schilling, who allowed six earned runs on 11 hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings in the Boston Red Sox's 7-2 loss in Oakland.

Schilling finished his 20-season major-league career in 2007 with 216 wins and 3,116 strikeouts. The six-time All-Star thrice finished with at least 300 strikeouts in a season (1997, 1998, 2002) and won three World Series championships (2001, 2004, 2007). In his third year of Hall of Fame eligibility in 2015, Schilling received 39.2 percent of the vote —€“ a new high for him but still far short of the 75 percent required for induction.
