Detroit Tigers Defeat Cleveland Indians and Columbus Clippers 12-0
The Detroit Tigers defeated a combination of the Cleveland Indians and Columbus Clippers 12-0 Tuesday night in a must-win contest. Per usual, Justin Verlander was outstanding.
Detroit Tigers players saw the Cleveland Indians clinched the American League Central crown on Monday. On Tuesday, the Tigers saw an almost entire B-team lineup. In a must win game, the Tigers dispatched this post clinch-day roster.
Justin Verlander mowed through the Indians order in another phenomenal start. He mowed down the Indians’ order that featured only two regulars. Multiple runners reached only once en route to a line of seven and two thirds innings pitched, four hits, one walk and 12 strikeouts.
The Indians started Mike Clevinger, who had made some decent starts recently, but was rocked on Tuesday night.
Ian Kinsler walked and Cameron Maybin doubled to lead off the game. Miguel Cabrera then followed with a double of his own to bring both runners home to give the Tigers the 2-0 lead.
Cabrera struck once again in the second. James McCann singled and Maybin drew a walk. Cabrera then unloaded a home run to center field to extend the Tigers lead to 5-0.
The Tigers then extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth. McCann was hit by a pitch to start another rally.
Offense Keeps Scoring Runs
Jose Iglesias added a single to put two runners on for Kinsler. He came through with an RBI single to extend the lead to 6-0. The Tigers loaded the bases, but Victor Martinez grounded into a double play to end the inning.
The Tigers added runs late to make sure everyone got involved. Cabrera reached on a single to lead of the seventh. J.D. Martinez later walked to put two men on base. Justin Upton then hit a moonshot down the left field line to extend the Tigers lead to 9-0.
Detroit emptied the bench and added once again to their lead in the eighth.
Nick Castellanos made his first appearance in a Tigers’ uniform since August 6. He came back with a double down the third base line in his first at bat back. Tyler Collins then brought him home on a triple up the right-center gap.
Andrew Romine added a home run down the right field line to extend the Tigers lead to 12-0. Steven Moya followed it up with a single to give the Tigers the cycle in four batters.

The Tigers and Indians will continue their series Wednesday night as the Tigers continue their must win stretch. They currently sit one game out of the Wild Card as Baltimore lost tonight. Michael Fulmer and Zach McAllister his get the starts for their teams as the Indians use a bullpen day to set their postseason rotation.
