The Chicago Cubs have signed RHP Jean Machi to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training, according to a tweet from his agent, Felix Olivo.
Machi, who split time between the Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants in 2015, has proven to be a reliable reliever in the past coming out of the bullpen, even serving as Boston's closer after the team lost Koji Uehara to season-ending injury. While his 2015 numbers were a combined 5.12 ERA with 6.5K/9, 3.4 BB/9, his numbers with the Giants from 2013-14 were a tidy 2.49 ERA with 7.7 K/9, 2.3 BB/9.
Despite nearly being 34-years-old, Machi can be under team control for up to more four season, of course pending he returns to his pitching number from prior to 2015.
Chalk the Machi signing as a low-risk, possible high reward contract, should he make the major-league club out of spring training.
