Cincinnati Reds see prospects keep progress rolling in Arizona Fall League for Peoria Javelinas

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Cincinnati Reds have seen their prospects contribute to the Peoria Javelinas and the trend continues.

The Javelinas own the longest winning streak of the Arizona Fall League and have several Cincinnati Reds’ prospects on their roster.  They also own a five game losing streak.  It is within this context that several prospects have been showing off their talents.

Utilityman Brandon Dixon is among those that has been having a superior fall league.  He is second on the team with a .351 average.  He has also been playing primarily first base after playing second base during the regular season.

Even more impressive than Dixon’s fall league play has been the play of Zach Vincej  at short.  His defense has continued to be elite, while he has found a stroke to lead the team in batting average.   He also has 15 RBIs in just 10 games.

The one starting pitcher that the Reds sent to the fall league was Seth Varner.  Varner has not be good.  He has an ERA over 7.

The Reds are watching these prospects closely as most of them will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft this December.  Vincej is likely the closest call.  Dixon is not advanced enough defensively for teams to look at him.

While Vincej and Dixon are getting close to a roster spot for the Cincinnati Reds, others are not doing as well.

Brian O’Grady is having a weak fall.  He is batting a mediocre .269 with a .308 OBP.  O’Grady is usually a first baseman, but is a back-up in Arizona.  He was able to sustain a .363 OBP at Daytona Beach during the regular season.

Former top catching prospect, Chad Wallach, is also having trouble this fall.  He is a batting a pedestrian .244 with an OBP of .311.  He needs to be doing better offensively, if the Reds are going to move him out from behind the plate.

Evan Mitchell is having an in between fall.  He has an ERA over 7 and is giving up a home run every five innings.  On the other hand, he has a WHIP just barely over 1.

Then there is Nick Routt, who is having a fall similar to Mitchell.  As reliever, he has an ERA over four, but a WHIP under 1.  He’s showing that he has what it takes to make a step up.

Routt and Vincej have made the best cases to join the forty man roster so far this fall.  Dixon and Barrett Astin also have chances.  The rest of the Cincinnati Reds on the Javelinas don’t have much of a chance.
