Chris Archer scolds two young Rays pitchers for being 'late'
Before the Tampa Bay Rays could take the field for their first workouts, Chris Archer was making sure to set the tone for spring training.
With team meetings set to begin at 9 a.m. Sunday, pitching prospects Jacob Faria and Blake Snell arrived 32 minutes early at 8:28 a.m.
Unfortunately, 32 minutes early might as well be late in Archer’s book as he took the time to scold the two young pitchers in front of reporters.
"You guys are the last two pitchers here," Archer told the minor leaguers, according to the Tampa Bay Times. "You guys have zero service time. You got no right to be coming in after me, really. I get here super early. I wouldn't expect you to be here at 6:30, but 8:30?"
While showing up to most jobs 30 minutes early would likely be commendable, Archer cited a legacy program that was passed down to him from James Shields and David Price as to the reasoning for the ultimate promptness. Either way, as a new, younger leader in the clubhouse for the Rays, Archer is looking to set a tone early.
