Child thrown out after running on field

Published Apr. 19, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

A boy and an adult were ejected from US Cellular Field in Chicago Thursday after the youngster ran onto the field during the sixth inning, before being swiftly picked up by White Sox player Dayan Viciedo.

"My first reaction was just to grab him," Viciedo told the Chicago Tribune through an interpreter. "What I was thinking was that I hoped a ball doesn't hit him, so that is why I instinctively went to grab him."

The child's age and identity were not revealed, but he appeared to be around 5 years old.

White Sox spokesman Scott Reifert said it was necessary to take the incident seriously, with Major League Baseball rules calling for the ejection of fans who run onto the field.

"Safety is our No. 1 concern and we are happy the child is fine," Reifert said. "But going on the field is stuff we do take seriously. It's not something we condone in any way."

The White Sox lost the game 5-3 to the Orioles.
