Cardinals Wacha returned from injury stronger than ever, keeps going
Cardinals starter Michael Wacha on Wednesday won his 13th game of the season -- second-most in the National League -- and the way he's throwing, he could close in on 20 wins by the time the end of September rolls around.
St. Louis held its collective breath last season when the big right-hander was lost to a shoulder injury and couldn't pitch in the postseason. He bypassed the surgical route for rest and rehab and, well, it's worked like a charm.
According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the club has already reevaluated its initial plan for limiting the stress and workload on Wacha's arm because of how dominantly he has pitched.
In his last start at Cincinnati, he went seven shutout innings in the Cards' 3-0 win. As the club watches closely for fatigue, they're simply not seeing it. Wacha owns a 2.92 ERA with 112 strikeouts in 132.1 innings pitched.
“We’ve been pretty adamant about if it looks right we’re not doing anything,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told the Post-Dispatch. “If it doesn’t look right, it’s going to be obvious he needs time. Right now, I just want him to keep pitching. I want that to be what he hears from me. As long as feels all right, as long as it looks all right, he’s going to be on the mound.”
