Bumgarner strikes out 6 in 4 shutout innings
Even in spring training, Madison Bumgarner wanted to get even.
Bumgarner struck out six in four scoreless innings and the San Francisco Giants hit three quick home runs off Bronson Arroyo in a 7-0 win Thursday over the Cincinnati Reds.
Bumgarner retired the first 10 Reds before Brandon Phillips singled in the fourth. That was the only hit allowed by Bumgarner, who walked none.
''These guys roughed me up when I faced them last year. I definitely didn't forget about it,'' he said. It's the best I've felt all spring. I feel like I'm where I need to be right now.''
Bumgarner was a rookie when he won in the World Series last year. He is listed as Giants' fifth starter this season.
''We don't think of him as our No. 5 guy,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. ''It's just the way we set it up. We did what's best for him and for the team. He's a big strong guy. He's throwing the ball better really than he'd thrown all year.''
Andres Torres, Freddy Sanchez and Cody Ross homered against Arroyo in a four-run third inning.
''They hit three off-speed pitches out,'' Arroyo said. ''I was tired after three innings. I just threw all fastballs in the fourth to build my arm strength.''
Edinson Volquez, the Reds' opening-day starter, made his first spring appearance after clearing up a visa problems in the Dominican Republic. Set to go three innings, he reached his pitch count after 2 1-3 innings.
''My arm feels good but my body is pretty tired,'' Volquez said. ''I flew out of the Dominican at 7:30 a.m. and didn't get here until 10:30 p.m. I am just happy to get into a game.''
Volquez will next pitch in a minor league game on March 15.
''I'm just happy that he's healthy,'' manager Dusty Baker said.
Reds reliever Aroldis Chapman gave up a run on two hits in two innings but struck out three.
''He threw some good changeups,'' Baker said. ''We wanted to give him another pitch to get them off his fastball. He looked better than he did the last time out.''
Edgar Renteria, the World Series MVP last year with San Francisco, played for Cincinnati. Giants fans gave him a standing ovation and chanted ''MVP!''
''It was pretty neat. We all appreciate what Edgar did for us,'' Bochy said.
