Yovani Gallardo pitched five shutout innings and provided all the offense Milwaukee needed with a solo home run, leading the Brewers to a 1-0 victory over a split squad of Kansas City Royals on Saturday.

Gallardo allowed four hits with two walks and struck out three. After allowing two base runners in the first inning, he had two 1-2-3 innings and allowed only two runners to reach second base.

``It was pretty good and exciting,'' Gallardo said. ``Anytime I get a chance to hit I am going to do the best I can. I laid off some pretty good pitches. It's a 3-2 (count) while facing a pitcher so it's one of those things. It was right there. I don't get too many of those either.''

It was reminiscent of last season's win over Pittsburgh on April 29 in which Gallardo became only the third pitcher in major league history to win a 1-0 game while recording 10 strikeouts and hitting a home run.

Gallardo hasn't been named the Opening Day starter by manager Ken Macha but appears to be in line for the job with two more starts scheduled in spring training.

Kyle Davies had his best outing of the spring while trying to secure a spot in the Royals' rotation. He faced the Brewers regulars for the most part and allowed three hits with no walks and six strikeouts in four innings.

His only mistake came against Gallardo.

``It's one of those things where you don't want to be too fine with him because I don't want to walk him,'' said Davies, who was 8-9 with a 5.27 ERA in 22 starts in 2009. ``I ended up throwing a meatball and he hit it.''

Davies might have turned a corner after struggling most of the spring.

``The biggest number on the scoreboard today was the no walks,'' Davies said. ``I was ahead of most of the batters I faced and it makes it a lot easier to put them away when you are ahead of them. I still need to work on my command.''
