The Atlanta Braves announced late Monday that backup infielder Phil Gosselin will need surgery to repair his fractured left thumb.
Gosselin left the Braves' game against the Marlins on Sunday with what was originally thought to be a thumb sprain, but an MRI revealed the injury to be more serious.
According to the team, Gosselin has an avulsion fracture in his thumb that will require surgery, which will be performed on Wednesday morning.

The 26-year-old is expected to need six to eight weeks to recover from the procedure.
Gosselin is hitting .325/.357/.425 with 13 hits in 40 at-bats in the 20 games in which he's played for the Braves this season.
