A's Zobrist 'looks good', could go out on rehab stint soon

Published May. 15, 2015 12:23 p.m. ET

Oakland A's utility man/all-around versatile player Ben Zobrist is recovering well from surgery to repair a left medial meniscus tear in his knee.

The A's have been without Zobrist for a few weeks now, after he injured the knee on a slide in Kansas City on April 19th. The surgery took place on April 28th and the A's had him pegged to miss around four to six weeks, but he seems to be ahead of that schedule at the moment.

In fact, as manager Bob Melvin told Rick Eymer of MLB.com, Zobrist could head out on a rehab assignment as early as Monday.

"While we have been here, he has seen more action on the field and taken more batting practice," A's manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday. "He looks good."

The A's could definitely use Zobrist back in the lineup and on the diamond, as they've really had a tough time tightening up on defense. A healthy Zobrist returning to the lineup would also presumably help the offense get a better sense of identity and do away with the mixing and matching Melvin has done with the third spot in the order (where Zobrist hit prior to his injury).

Plus, if the A's are out of contention by trade deadline season, a healthy, productive Zobrist would be a more than attractive commodity for a number of clubs.
