A's reliever gets dinged in head after ball boy comes up short on full-extension grab

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:59 p.m. ET

Like a bodyguard trying to stop a bullet, an Oakland Athletics ball boy stationed at the team's bullpen on Monday laid out and extended his glove, but it wasn't enough. The ball had sliced foul off of Jefry Marte's bat and took a high hop that escaped the ballboy's glove, caromed off the back wall and dinged pitcher Chris Smith in the head.

After the play, Smith busted the ball boy's chops by slamming his towel to the ground and staring the young man down, who briefly hung his head in disappointment as he walked away. He really did make a heck of an effort, but relievers are a notoriously ball-breaking bunch.
