Ailing Carter diagnosed with bronchitis
Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter, who is battling Stage 4 brain cancer, was diagnosed with bronchitis after being rushed to a hospital following a coughing attack.
His daughter, Kimmy Bloemers, said that Carter was also having "shooting pains in his back" when he checked into the emergency room Thursday night.
The New York Mets great underwent X-rays and a CT scan on his chest and back, which confirmed bronchitis to dispel early fears of blood clotting or pneumonia. Carter returned home Friday morning.
"What a huge praise that it is not as serious as it could have been," Bloemers wrote on the family's private website Friday, before being reported by ESPN. "However because of dad's condition, a chest cold can drain dad's energy more. The sweet nurse said that everything looked great, which was a relief."
Carter was continuing his cancer treatment Friday. He was due to receive a giant get well card filled with messages from Mets fans.
The goodwill gesture was organized at Citi Field on Friday before the 4-3 defeat to the Los Angeles Angels.
