Adams continues to swing a hot bat

Every player wants to excel both offensively and defensively, but when aspect of a player's game is slumping, it's nice if the other aspect can pick up the slack.

Enter Matt Adams. The Cardinals first baseman has struggled with the glove recently, but offensively he's come through in some big spots.

Cardinals.com breaks it down.

“On Thursday, those included a tiebreaking single to left off Nationals ace Max Scherzer with two out and two on in the sixth. Jason Heyward scored on the hit, giving Adams his third RBI in two games and helping push the Cardinals toward a 4-1 win over the Nationals.”

Adams is widely regarded as an above average defender, but the past few days have not been kind to that reputation.

“Adams, a typically sure-handed defender, committed three errors in the 20 innings he was in the field this series.”

However, the struggles have done nothing to cause manager Mike Matheny's confidence to waver.

"He's a good defender," Matheny told Cardinals.com. "He's got great range. But these times happen. That was more, I think, he was thinking about the next play. He was thinking about the throw across the field, and in the meantime, one slipped away."
