Schalke signs French defender Nicolas Plestan

French defender Nicolas Plestan is joining Schalke from Lille on

a three-year contract – the latest in a spate of new arrivals at

the Bundesliga club.

Schalke announced the 29-year-old Plestan’s arrival on Tuesday,

the last day of the transfer window. He has been at Lille since

2003 and played 109 French first-division games there.

Coach Felix Magath is revamping Schalke – releasing costly

veterans and bringing in former Spain striker Raul Gonzalez and

former Germany defender Christoph Metzelder. Other arrivals include

Romanian international Ciprian Deac and Ghana veteran Hans

Sarpei.

Atletico Madrid said earlier Tuesday midfielder Jose Manuel

Jurado was moving to Schalke, and Magath said Netherlands forward

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was set to join from AC Milan.
