CAF: African player of year list ‘fictitious’

The African Football Confederation says a list of 17 players

supposedly nominated for Africa’s 2010 player of the year award is

”fictitious” and was not released by the body.

In a statement late Tuesday, CAF said the list of African stars,

which includes Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan, Chelsea and Ivory Coast

striker Didier Drogba and South Africa’s Steven Pienaar, and was

reported widely as the official contenders for the continent’s best

player, ”did not emanate from its offices.”

CAF said ”we therefore urge the general public and the football

community to disregard the said list circulating in some media

circles.”

The origin of the fake list is unknown.

CAF said it would release the real nominees for Africa’s player

of the year ”in the days ahead.”
