MIAMI (AP) -- Right-hander Paul Clemens was recalled Sunday from Triple-A to join the Miami Marlins' rotation as a replacement for struggling left-hander Justin Nicolino, who was optioned to the minors.

Clemens will pitch in the majors for the first time since 2014 when he starts Monday against the Colorado Rockies. Miami is a season-high five games above .500 and will be trying for a four-game sweep.

"I'm excited to help the team win," Clemens said. "There are a lot of ingredients in here that can go a long way. I just want to be another piece to that."

Clemens went 6-4 with a 4.30 ERA in 14 starts at New Orleans this year. He's 4-8 with a 5.51 ERA in 48 major league games, most recently with Houston in 2014.

Nicolino was sent to New Orleans after going 2-4 with a 5.17 ERA in 10 starts.

"It wasn't quite good enough," Miami manager Don Mattingly said. "We know he's going to be back and part of what we're doing. This gives him a chance to work on his stuff and improve."
