Report: Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson benched for being tardy

Published Dec. 7, 2015 11:14 a.m. ET

New York Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson wasn't spotted on the field to open the game in Week 13, but it wasn't because of an injury.

According to CBS, Wilkerson was benched and forced to sit out the team's first two series due to disciplinary reasons. Those reasons stemmed from Wilkerson reportedly being late to a team meeting.

"Obviously, Mo is one of our best players and we respect him a lot," Bowles said via Rich Cimini of ESPN. "[It was] something we handled in-house and we went to the game and that's what we decided."

Wilkerson's benching didn't come back to hurt the Jets as the Giants didn't score on either of their first two possessions. Additionally, the Jets came away with the win, and a much-needed one at that.

Wilkerson talked about the benching after the game, and was asked if it was difficult to sit out the start of the game.

“This is a professional business. Whenever my name is called to go in I’ve just got to do my job.”

Todd Bowles has proved that he's a no-nonsense coach, which is far from what Rex Ryan was last year for the Jets. This is just one example of that.
