The Denver Nuggets and the Ty Lawson saga

At this point, many people are aware of the rumors that have surrounded Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson. In fact, there was even a video from draft day of Lawson, stating, “I’m going to Sacramento”. Obviously, that did not happen as Lawson is still a Nugget and the Kings have since signed free agent point guard Rajon Rondo.

What brings Lawson back into the news again, is unfortunately not any positive news for him or the Nuggets. For the second time this year, Lawson was arrested for suspicion of DUI. Tuesday morning, around 2 a.m., Lawson was pulled over in Los Angeles and ultimately arrested after displaying signs of intoxication.

Lawson has already fallen out of good graces with the organization and ultimately the fan base at this point as well, but now in light of this recent incident, he is not making it any easier for the Nuggets to unload him for valuable assets in return.

With the selection of Emmanuel Mudiay in the seventh spot in this year’s NBA Draft, it was even more obvious that the Nuggets were preparing to move in a new direction, and they have made efforts to do so, but have clearly not moved on from Lawson to date. But again, the issue now becomes has Lawson’s actions made it even more difficult to find a suitor for Lawson who is still willing to give up a valuable piece in return.

Lawson’s ability is clear with career averages of 14.2 points per game and 6.6 assists per game, and he is coming off a season of 15 points per game and just under 10 assists per game. There is no doubt that Lawson can help a team in need of a point guard. He is one of the fastest guards in the league, and does have the ability to knock down shots. Even more, he is still only 27-years-old, which means he has plenty of years of his prime left ahead of him.

The former North Carolina Tar Heel has spent all six seasons of his NBA career in Denver. The signs are clear the Denver is looking to change that, but with the recent developments, it may be a long wait to see if there are any suitors currently interested in taking the whole package that seems to come with Lawson now.
