Should Timberwolves keep Justin Hamilton?

Published May. 28, 2015 12:02 p.m. ET

After he was traded from the Miami Heat to the New Orleans Pelicans on deadline day, in a move that brought Goran Dragic to South Beach, center Justin Hamilton's NBA career was on life support.

The Pelicans quickly waived him. But the Minnesota Timberwolves were there to put in a claim, and Hamilton went on to average a respectable 9.0 points per game in 17 contests for his fourth team in two seasons.

If Minnesota chooses to extend Hamilton a qualifying offer, he becomes a restricted free agent this summer. Should they keep him around? Here's Timberwolves.com's Kyle Ratke with a closer look:

"The most unique skill Hamilton has at his position is his ability to shoot the three-point shot. The ability is there, he just hasn't had much of an opportunity thus far in his career. He shot 32.3 percent from deep last season, but attempted just 0.8 threes per game last season. If he can convince coaches that he can shoot 35-40 percent over the course of a season, he might get more of an opportunity to shoot the long ball."

Centers who can shoot are invaluable in today's NBA, but the Timberwolves are expected to be extremely deep in the frontcourt next year. If Hamilton is re-signed, he'll never see the court.

There's always a spot in the NBA for big men with touch, but this may not be it for Hamilton.
