Reviewing the pleasantries of Aminu's 2014-15 season
The Dallas Mavericks signed Al-Farouq Aminu, a former lottery pick possessing rare defensive versatility that's perpetually handcuffed to a troublesome jumper, to a one-year deal last summer with the hope he'd perform above his pay grade.
It was a low-risk, high-reward acquisition that worked beyond Dallas' wildest dreams in the postseason. Aminu averaged 11.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game, infusing the rickety Mavs with some serious athleticism at the wing position.
Unfortunately, Aminu's stellar play was noticed by other teams, and there's a decent chance he signs elsewhere this summer. But if he does, Dallas will always have that one year. Here's more from SB Nation's Mavericks blog Mavs Moneyball:
"Dig a little deeper into the numbers and it's easy to see why everyone is so excited about him. Aminu posted career-bests in several metrics, such as PER, win share rate, and real plus-minus. In terms of defensive real plus-minus, Aminu ranked sixth in the league at his position, finally capitalizing on his elite length, quickness and leaping ability. Aminu was asked to guard every position on the court with the exception of center, and demonstrated lockdown potential as a man defender."
Will Aminu be back? Maybe, maybe not. But the Mavericks would be wise to try as hard as they can to retain his service. He's only 24 years old, with a physical makeup that doesn't grow on trees. If a coach can ever get Aminu to shoot straight, watch out.
