Reports: Shaw to be Nuggets coach
Brian Shaw is getting his first NBA head-coaching gig and he'll have some big shoes to fill.
Shaw was hired Monday night as coach of the Denver Nuggets, according to multiple reports. He'll replace George Karl, the 2013 NBA Coach of the Year who led the team to a 57-win regular season but was fired after a first-round exit in the playoffs.
Shaw, 47, was an assistant under Phil Jackson with the Los Angeles Lakers for six seasons before serving as associate head coach with the Indiana Pacers the past two years.
He also interviewed for head-coach openings with the Los Angeles Clippers and Brooklyn Nets.
The Denver Post first reported Shaw's hiring and said he got the nod over former Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins. Former Phoenix Suns coach Alvin Gentry, former Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro, Nuggets assistant Melvin Hunt and San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Brett Brown also interviewed for the position.
Shaw has won five NBA championships, three as a player with the Lakers and two as Jackson's assistant in 2009 and 2010.
