Report: Celtics to pitch Kevin Love on playing with Paul Pierce and Robin Lopez

When news broke that Kevin Love plans to opt out of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent this summer, several crazy rumors popped up.

Perhaps the craziest was tied to the Boston Celtics, one team that needs a star and is badly interested in adding Love. They have the cap space to sign him to a max deal, and a solid infrastructure to be competitive for the foreseeable future.

So, how does Paul Pierce fit into all of this?

But what happened to the Los Angeles Clippers? Wasn't Pierce planning to reunite with Doc Rivers?

This is pretty ridiculous for so many reasons. First and foremost: Pierce will be 38 years old next season. He can no longer log over 30 minutes every night, and isn't nearly the player he once was (on both ends). His best position, ironically, is as a stretch four, which is exactly where Love would play. Pierce can't really guard small forwards anymore.

So, why would Love be interested in teaming up with someone so old? The Celtics are currently building around a young nucleus, with guys like Marcus Smart, Kelly Olynyk, James Young and Isaiah Thomas at their core. That's kind of why they're so attractive in the first place.

And we haven't even mentioned Robin Lopez yet, who's way out of Boston's price range if they plan on signing Love to a max contract. As far as rumors go, this one might be the drunkest you'll see all summer.
