Purple and gold shows its true colors after week of false hope

Published Jan. 6, 2016 2:30 a.m. ET

After two-plus months of misery, the Lakers have looked like an actual NBA team in 2016 with three straight wins entering Tuesday night’s home game against the Warriors.

At least you can’t accuse the guys in purple and gold of filling their fans’ heads with false hope.

Los Angeles not only came crashing down to earth with a 109-88 loss to the champs, but it did so with some of the most Laker of plays, to boot.

In the game’s closing minutes, Metta World Peace missed a wide-open breakaway layup in front of the Golden State bench, sending his guests off with a nice laugh out the door. What a host.

You can see the play here.

And here.

And here’s a slo-mo look.

Not wanting to miss out on the fun, Nick Young took a page out of Metta’s play book in the second quarter.

First, he missed two free throws. Then he came right back and airballed a jump shot. Then he got booed by the fans.

Yup, the Lakers are back!
