Kevin Love leads the Cleveland Cavaliers with record-setting first quarter performance.
Well, well, well. What a game indeed. The Cleveland Cavaliers had themselves a night on Wednesday, putting up 137 points in a win that wasn’t even as close as the 12 point margin suggests.
The Cavs were fueled by an INSANE first-quarter performance by Kevin Love (we’ll get to that) and the team ended the night with a regular-season franchise-record 20 three-pointers made.
Now to the marks.
Kevin Love: A+++++++++++
34 points. In the first quarter.
The most points scored in a first quarter in NBA history? Check.
Second-most points scored in a single quarter in NBA history? Check
Second-most three-point field goals made in a single quarter in NBA history? Check
Cavaliers franchise record for most three-point field goals in a quarter or half? Check
A litany of other records I probably just don’t have the resources or time to discover? Check
This was one for the ages, folks. Love finished the game with 40 points, his highest total since joining the Cavaliers.
Klay Thompson set the mark in 2015 with 37 points in the third quarter vs. the Sacramento Kings, but Love’s performance was right on par. It’s sure hard to lose a game when you get a performance like that from Love, who was already at his regular season average for points at four-and-a-half minutes into the game.
It was a quarter that even King James won’t be able to eclipse. Imagine that.
LeBron James: A+
LeBron James recorded his 44th career triple-double in impressive fashion, finishing the game with 31 points, 13 assists, and 10 boards. Somehow, it was done silently and surgically, as Love was the talk of the game after the first quarter.
The anchor of the victor, as usual, James was all over the court and played a huge role in feeding the Love flames in the first quarter. The King had 12 of his 13 assists in the first half.
An all-around flawless performance by James, who was happy to be a part of K-Love’s big night.
Kyrie Irving: A
Yet another solid performance from Irving, the Cavs point guard scored 20 points on a tidy eight-of-fifteen from the field.
Despite the incredible performances by the other two of the big three, Irving had the highest plus-or-minus of any player on the court.
Irving is continuing an offensive onslaught through the team’s first 13 games, averaging 23.7 points a night on 47% shooting.
Channing Frye: A
Maybe we’re being a little too generous with these grades, but it was a huge night for the Cavs offense. The team finished with a season-high 137 points.
Frye did everything the Cavs asked of the veteran power forward. Finishing with four three-point field goals and 14 points, Frye continues to shine in his role off the bench.
Frye now has four games this season with four or more three-pointers made, and the Cavs have won every of those such games.
Maybe it’s been said once or twice already, but the story of the night was certainly a ginormous first quarter from Kevin Love. Nonetheless, near-flawless performances from the other stars on the team cemented the victory.
The Cavaliers are now off to a superb 11-2 start to the season and don’t look to be letting off the gas anytime soon.
