Metallica goes Jimi Hendrix for national anthem
By Vincent Frank
No one in their right mind would attempt to repeat Jim Hendrix’s guitar-only rendition of The Star Spangled Banner, right?
Wrong.
The Northern California-based rock group Metallica did just that prior to the San Francisco Giants taking on the Los Angeles Angels this past Saturday at AT&T Park.
And it was pretty amazing. You can watch the video here.
James Hetfield and his group absolutely killed this performance. And while some will never compare it to what Hendrix did at Woodstock in 1969, it appears to have come darn close.
For what it’s worth, Hendrix’s rendition of The Star Spangled Banner is to this day considered one of the greatest musical numbers in history.
You be the judge.
Even if you think it’s not comparable, it’s still mind-boggling just how good Metallica was at its rendition.
Then again, the back drop of Woodstock in the late 1960’s will never be duplicated. Nor will Hendrix for that matter.
