Cavs attempted to acquire Pablo Prigioni at trade deadline
by Scott Sargent
The Legend of Matthew Dellavedova continues to live on through the NBA Finals, but this doesn’t mean that the Cleveland Cavaliers did not try to upgrade the backup point guard spot in February. We heard about players like Steve Nash being on the phones with the Cavs, but according to The New York Post’s Mark Berman, there was another guard on David Griffin’s radar in Pablo Prigioni.
According to a source, the Cavaliers made a big pitch at the trade deadline for Knicks point guard Pablo Prigioni . The Knicks instead dealt Prigioni to Houston with a trade exception for a package that included Alexey Shved and two second-rounders. Prigioni helped Houston in the wake of Patrick Beverly’s injury and could have come in handy for the Cavaliers after the loss of Kyrie Irving.
It’s interesting that the Cavs went back to the Knicks’ well after landing two swingmen in J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert earlier in the season. Both players had substantial roles with the team’s second-half surge and Dellavedova, despite all of his shortcomings, has emerged as one of the postseason’s best storylines. The 38-year-old Prigioni, conversely, ended up playing roughly 20 minutes per night through the postseason for the Rockets before completely disappearing in the Western Conference Finals against the Golden State Warriors, averaging just 3.1 points per game. Everything happens for a reason.
