Will The Real Mike Morin Please Stand Up For The LA Angels?

LA Angels right-hander Mike Morin has been good and he also been bad over the last three years out of the Angels bullpen. In 2016 Morin had moments of brilliance and he also had some very forgettable outings.  Is he worth keeping?

LA Angels reliever Mike Morin started out the 2016 season pitching pretty well in the first six weeks.  On May 11th Morin lowered his ERA to 1.84 with a two inning relief outing against the St. Louis Cardinals.  But like so many other LA Angels pitchers as quickly as Morin had success, his effectiveness faded away.

Morin finished the month of May with seven forgettable outings that ballooned his ERA to 5.48.  The difference for Morin his opponents batting average jumped from .157 to .256 during that stretch.  this meant one thing, Morin was not fooling many batters.

In June Morin righted his ship somewhat pitching effectively in eight of his ten appearances in the month which helped lower his season ERA to 4.93.  His opponents batting average against went down to .228 and his WHIP went down to 1.13.

However, Angels manager Mike Scioscia and his staff felt Morin needed some time in the minors to work a few things out. When he came back in early August after Cam Bedrosian went on the disabled list he pitched almost the same as he had in June.  Morin posted a 4.38 ERA for the month and a 1.14 WHIP in August.

However, as he has done over the past few seasons, Morin finished the season strong pitching in September.  Morin pitched in 11 games with an ERA of 2.16 to finish the season with a 4.37 ERA and a 2-2 record.  He posted a 1.20 WHIP with .250 opponents batting average. Morin pitched 55.2 innings walking only15 batters and striking out 49.

Mike Morin has been an effective member at times in the Angels bullpen, but I’m not sure if he should be a part of the pen in 2017.  It will probably again depend on how he pitches in Spring Training on whether or not he will earn a roster spot for 2017.
