The Giants may be scouting the Mets for a potential trade

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, the San Francisco Giants are paying close attention to the New York Mets’ series with the Washington Nationals. Giants’ general manager Brian Sabean is in attendance, as his ball club is in need of a starting pitcher and a third baseman.
Jonathan Niese and Dillon Gee are the likely pitchers that Sabean will be watching, and Daniel Murphy could solve the Giants third base issue.
The Giants traded for Casey McGehee during the offseason to fill their third base need, but so far this season he has been terrible. He is batting .181, and fans booed him this past Monday night when he committed his fifth error of the year.
Murphy is a natural third baseman, but he made the switch to second base because David Wright mans that position for the Mets. Since Wright has been out of the lineup with an injury, Murphy has switched over to third base, where he has not committed an error.
Prospect Dilson Herrera could be the Mets long-term solution at second base, and with Wright returning soon, Murphy could be expendable. Also factor in that Murphy will be a free agent after this season, and the ball club has not approached him about a long-term deal.
As for pitching, even with injuries, the Mets still have a surplus of starters, and prospects Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz are waiting in the wings. That could make Niese and Gee, who have both been rumored to be a part various trades, expendable.
