San Francisco Giants: Giants Exercise Matt Moore's Contract Option

The San Francisco Giants have exercised Matt Moore‘s contract option for 2017. It was a rather procedural move, as it will cost the Giants $7 million.

Moore will be under team control through 2019 and the team clearly sees Moore as a part of their future. Moore was brought to the San Francisco Giants when they traded for the left handed pitcher at the July 31st trade deadline.

The deal sent popular Giant and third baseman Matt Duffy and prospects to the Tampa Bay Rays. While the trade was a surprise for fans who did not expect the Giants to trade an everyday player, Moore quickly proved Bobby Evans right with his pitching down the stretch and into October.

Also today, the Giants outrighted catcher Tony Sanchez off of the team’s 40 man roster, making him a free agent. The Giants had also made a move Tuesday, signing former San Diego Padre Josh Johnson to a minor league deal. Johnson, a two time All-Star, hasn’t pitched in the Major Leagues since 2013 because of multiple elbow injuries.

Other News & Notes

Phil Nevin, a former San Diego Padres first baseman under Bruce Bochy, is a finalist for the managerial job with the Arizona Diamondbacks. If he is not hired by the D’Backs, their are reports he will be hired by the Giants as a base coach, according to Robert Murray of Today’s Knuckleball.

Hank Schulman, a San Francisco Giants beat writer, tweeted out today that he is hearing the same thing.
