Rookie Grichuk resumes hitting as return to lineup looms
The St. Louis Cardinals continue to plow forward even with two-thirds of their outfield on the disabled list.
Rookie center field Randal Grichuk has been out since Aug. 16 with a muscle strain and ligament sprain in his elbow. On Monday he made his first real progress toward getting back onto the field with a session in the batting cage.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, he plans to make some more cuts on Tuesday.
“It felt good,” Grichuk told the Post-Dispatch. “(But) I didn’t feel anything hitting when I hurt it.”
Grichuk is expected to start throwing later this week, and expects to be back in the lineup before the regular season is over.
As for when left fielder Matt Holliday expects to make his return from a second quad injury, manager Matt Matheny didn't provide specific details: “He’s continuing to push a little further with his running. There’s a percentage that he’s at. But he’s moving well.”
