Report: Padres trying to deal starter James Shields

James Shields might be on his way out of San Diego after just a season.
According to an ESPN report, the Padres are actively shopping Shields to other teams with the hope that they will trade him this offseason.
The right-hander signed a four-year deal with the Padres last offseason after electing free agency following a run to the World Series with the Kansas City Royals. Shields has three years and $63 million remaining on his contract.
Shields' performance in 2015 was his statistical worst since a rough 2010 season in which he posted a 13-15 record with a 5.18 ERA.
In his first season with the Padres, the righty posted a 13-7 record with a 3.91 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. While those numbers are by no means atrocious, they are a regression for a pitcher who posted a 58-39 record, 3.17 ERA, and 1.16 WHIP in the prior four seasons, three of which earned him votes for the Cy Young Award, MVP, or both.
Shields, who will turn 34 this offseason, might be too risky of a financial commitment for the Padres to hold on to.
