New York Yankees: Dellin Betances Would Welcome Aroldis Chapman Signing

The New York Yankees made the decision to trade Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs at the trade deadline. Would they welcome him back as a free agent?

When it appeared like the New York Yankees weren’t going to be a contender for a playoff spot, they made the decision to trade a few key players. One of those players was closer Aroldis Chapman.

After serving his suspension to begin the season, Chapman pitched very well for the Yankees as their closer. In 31 games for the Yankees this season, Chapman totaled 20 saves, a 2.01 ERA, and 0.89 WHIP. When he was traded back into the National League, Chapman’s numbers only improved. With the Chicago Cubs, Chapman totaled a 1.01 ERA and 16 saves in 28 games.

When Chapman and Miller were both traded, it was Betances who became the closer for the Yankees. In August, Betances did very well in the role, as he totaled seven saves in eight opportunities with a 0.68 ERA.

However, Betances did struggle as the closer for the Yankees in September. In the final full month of the season, Betances totaled five saves in six opportunities, two losses, and a 10.80 ERA. The poor month of September ballooned Betances’ ERA to over 3.00 for the season.

Due to Betances struggling a bit in September, the Yankees might look to sign Chapman when he becomes a free agent. If that is indeed what happens, Betances would welcome returning to the setup role.

“Anything that’s going to help our ballclub out, whatever it is, I’m all for it,” Betances said to Maria Guardado of NJ.com. “All I want to do is win and have an opportunity to be playing at this time.”

While Betances might be the closer for the Yankees next season, there is a need to help him in the bullpen. Having a great setup man and closer is something that the Yankees are accustomed too, but it is something that they don’t currently have.

As the offseason begins, it will be interesting to see what happens with the Yankees and Chapman. It is good to see that Betances is alright with moving back to the setup role if it means helping the team win.
