Mets to promote Conforto, Plawecki, Kelly, and Ynoa on Thursday

With rosters expanding to 40 players, the Mets have announced their first additions
The Mets are calling up Michael Conforto, Kevin Plawecki, Ty Kelly, and Gabriel Ynoa from Triple-A Las Vegas prior to Thursday’s game.
Rafael Montero and T.J. Rivera were recently sent down to Triple-A and can’t return to the majors for at least 10 days, but they should both be added to the roster once that time is up.
Let’s take a look at how Conforto, Plawecki, Kelly, and Ynoa might help…
Conforto
Conforto raked in Triple-A after being sent down and Mets manager Terry Collins said on Tuesday that Conforto would be ‘in the mix’ for playing time when he returned.
Collins’ ‘in the mix’ comment predated Curtis Granderson‘s two home runs on Tuesday, so we’ll see how this shakes out.
Yoenis Cespedes and Jay Bruce will remain entrenched in everyday roles, with the other outfielders — including Alejandro De Aza — fighting for playing time.
If Granderson and/or Bruce struggle at the level they were recently, Conforto should get a shot. If not, he’ll at least be a dangerous bat off the bench.
Plawecki
Travis d’Arnaud is hitting well this month (minus the power) and Rene Rivera is serving as Noah Syndergaard‘s personal catcher, so it’s hard to see Plawecki getting much playing time.
However, Plawecki’s presence on the roster will allow the Mets to pinch-hit with one of their other catchers when needed — something Collins is usually reluctant to do.
Kelly
Nothing against Ty Kelly, but here’s hoping he doesn’t see the field much.
If he does, it likely means that Asdrubal Cabrera, Neil Walker, or both are unavailable.
Ynoa
With the Mets currently featuring a starting rotation that includes both Robert Gsellman and Seth Lugo, adding Ynoa gives them some more depth.
If Steven Matz is able to return from his shoulder impingement, the Mets will be able to shift either Gsellman or Lugo to the pen.
If Matz is unable to return and the team suffers another injury to a starting pitcher, Ynoa will be in the mix for a spot start. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
