Mets teammates excited to have Yoenis Cespedes back
We already know how Noah Syndergaard feels about Yoenis Cespedes returning to the New York Mets, but it looks like his teammates are equally as excited.
Speaking with the New York Post, David Wright was thrilled, but kept expectations in check.
“I love the team we have,” Wright said. “Now we have to prove it.
“We should have a good team, but right now it’s just potential. We have to put it all together. Nobody thought we would end up where we were last year, so you can’t make predictions.’’
As it's been rumored, Cespedes had the Mets as his priority this offseason.
“Obviously, he genuinely wanted to come back and that’s the kind of guy you want to take the field with, someone who is willing to compromise,” Wright said. “I do know he made a point to his representatives to compromise and the team did, too.”
Wright wasn't the only Met excited about Cespedes' return. Stephen Matz, speaking at an award ceremony in New York, said "“He was so clutch. I definitely think he’s intimidating. To have him for a full year will be special.”
Curtis Granderson added: “Even if he can do half of what he did last year it would be good."
Cespedes ignited the Mets offense in the second half last season, hitting .287 with 17 homers and 44 RBI in 57 games. The Mets went on to win the NL East and claimed the NL pennant, falling short in the World Series against the Kansas City Royals.
If there was any added pressure to repeat last year's success, Wright isn't buying it.
“We already had a bull’s-eye on our back from Day One anyway,” said Wright. “That’s what comes from being NL champs, I don’t think that changes.’’
