Mets could look to re-sign Murphy if they fail to sign Zobrist

It's been reported that the New York Mets have made Ben Zobrist their No. 1 target, but they have backup options should they fail to sign the utilityman.

According to ESPN New York, the Mets are reluctant to go four years and could look to bring back Daniel Murphy.

"If the Mets' pursuit of Zobrist comes up short -- and that's the expectation if he is going to get a four-year offer at, say, $14 million a year -- the Mets still would like to upgrade in the middle infield. They have not ruled out re-signing Daniel Murphy if he is open to a hometown discount, and one Venezuelan report suggests they have shown interest in free agent Asdrubal Cabrera."

As a back up-back up plan, the Mets could look to upgrade their outfielders, specifically a platoon partner for center fielder Juan Lagares:

"If the Mets whiff in upgrading the middle infield with a bona fide starter, they alternatively would be more active in pursuing a lefty-hitting complement to Juan Lagares in center field. They then would sign a backup infielder -- whether that's Kelly Johnson or someone else of that stature."

At this time of year, there are plenty of rumors and options flying around, but there's no doubt Zobrist would be an ideal fit for the Mets.

He would be able to play second base full-time while giving some rest to David Wright at third base. He could also fill in the outfield and provide some veteran leadership alongside Wright.

In 2015, Zobrist slashed .276/.359/.450 over 126 games with the Oakland A's and Kansas City Royals.
