Marlins star Jose Fernandez killed in boating accident
We all woke up to horrific news this morning about Jose Fernandez.
Michelle Ioannou, Editor:
Jose Fernandez, the young, talented Miami Marlins ace was killed in a boating accident. He was just 24 years old, with his whole career still in front of him, and his whole life still in front of him.
This is just plain awful, there’s no other way of putting it.
Fernandez was a phenomenal pitcher, who will be remembered by his amazing smile and his star performance. At such a young age, he still was seen as a leader in the ballclub. This is all just so sad.
What makes things even more sickening? Fernandez was originally suppose to start on Sunday’s game against the Braves, but his start was pushed back due to Adam Conley‘s return….and so he could face the Mets on Monday morning.
That’s right, we were suppose to face him tomorrow.
This all just makes me sick.
Danny Abriano, Editor:
Fernandez was not only one of the brightest stars to ever grace the game with his presence, but one of the most humble.
And he posted on Instagram earlier this week that he was about to become a dad. Heartbreaking. Gut-wrenching.
When you think of Jose Fernandez, you think of utter dominance on the field. But you also think of joy, which is what he brought to every one of his starts.
There are also stories of his selflessness and courage. He defected from Cuba when he was 15 years old. During the trip over, his mom fell out of the boat. Fernandez, in the dark, dove in and saved her life.
As Michelle said, this is just plain awful. And it’s incredibly hard to try to put this into words. An amazing pitcher and better person is gone. It’s so hard to process, and I honestly don’t want to. Because that makes this real.
Many in the baseball world have been remembering Fernandez this morning, including members of the Mets…
Sad day for baseball with the loss of Jose Fernandez. Hearts out to his friends & family.
