Marlins assessing Jarred Cosart's fate after unconvincing rehab starts

Published Jun. 18, 2015 3:36 a.m. ET

The Miami Marlins were originally hoping to have Jarred Cosart return to the team this week, but it now appears as though that might not be the case.

Cosart, who has been on the disabled list with vertigo, threw 5 1/3 innings in a rehab start in Triple-A on Tuesday in which gave up seven hits and four runs with six strikeouts and two walks, throwing a total of 103 pitches.

Now, the Marlins are trying to assess Cosart's readiness to return to the majors, and the club is keeping tightlipped on when he's expected to be called up.

"To be determined," manager Dan Jennings said.

In seven starts for the Marlins this season, Cosart has maintained a 4.08 ERA with 24 strikeouts and 14 walks in 39 2/3 innings.

In his first rehab start on June 11, the 25-year-old righty gave up nine hits and two earned runs with one strikeout in 5 2/3 innings.

Now, Jennings and the front office will have to decide if calling up Cosart is in his and club's best interest.

"We'll come up with what is going to be our best plans going forward," the first-year manager said.
