Mariners flashback: New GM Dipoto strikes out manager Servais in '99

BY foxsports • February 1, 2016

New Seattle Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto was a pitcher at the MLB level for eight seasons, from 1993-2000. New Mariners manager Scott Servais, meanwhile, was a catcher for 11 years (from 1991-2001).

As one might suspect given the duo's track record throughout the 1990s, pitcher Dipoto and catcher Servais did cross paths a few times ... such as this instance on April 22, 1999, when Colorado Rockies reliever Dipoto struck out San Francisco Giants catcher Servais on a mystifying off-speed pitch:

This is of course relevant now since both Dipoto and Servais are key figures in the Mariners' organizational moves including letting go of GM Jack Zduriencik and manager Lloyd McClendon in hopes of making it to the postseason in 2016.

Time will tell if Dipoto's numerous changes work out, but there is this: As a player, Servais went 3-for-5 against Dipoto with a walk and a hit-by-pitch for his career (as pointed out by CBS Sports' Eye On Baseball blog).
