Los Angeles Angels quietly waving the white flag on the season

The Los Angeles Angels are closing in on the last month of the 2016 season. While they’ve won seven of their last eight, it doesn’t appear that they’ll make the postseason.

Last night the Los Angeles Angels sent Fernando Salas to the New York Mets for a minor league pitcher by the name of Erik Manoah. Earlier this month, the Kansas City Royals picked up Daniel Nava in exchange for cash and a “player to be named later.”

This means that the Angels are focusing on the salary cap. Usually, teams that have a real shot at a championship will go over the cap and pay the plenty tax. However, teams like the Angels have to dump their roster and stay under their limit.

When the Angels traded away Hector Santiago and Joe Smith on August 1st, Mike Scioscia assured the media and the fans that the Angels “were not waving the white flag on this season.”

Yes, the Angels have waived the white flag. Although, they are doing it very quietly by sending players like Daniel Nava for assignment. Allowing Salas to be acquired by the Mets isn’t a shocker trade.

Honestly, the move could have been made during the trade deadline and fans wouldn’t have lost their minds in the way they did when Santiago was traded.

For the Los Angeles Angels, waiving the white flag isn’t a bad thing. It shows they’re regrouping for next year.

Next season, the Angels want to get younger. Letting Salas go to the Royals is a sign that this season is over. Now, they’ll make it through September and shift to the winter meetings. In the past, the Angels have been attacked for being big spenders. That cannot happen this off-season.

The Los Angeles Angels must go all in during free agency. They must pick-up two solid ace pitchers, a significant upgrade at the left field position, and a solid closer. Whether or not this can be done remains to be seen. However, the Angels potentially will have money to spend.
