It's Time For The Angels to Part Ways With Geovany Soto
An August trade candidate, struggling veteran, and injury prone catcher; 33-year-old, Geovany Soto now finds himself in a rough position heading into the off-season, is it time for the Angels to say, “So Long, Soto” ?
The Los Angeles Angels face a tough decision, to re-sign Geovany Soto, or let him walk? A former Cub, Ranger, Athletic, and Red Sock, Soto is no stranger to the big league stage. Since entering the league in ’05 he’s seen both his numbers and playing time quickly digress.
However, it’s not entirely his fault.
It seems as if the “injury bug” is quite fond of him, as it plagues year after year. Most recently, Soto sustained a torn-meniscus in May which seen him miss a good portion of the 2016 season.
As a result, Soto had 78 plate appearances, while slashing .269/.321/.487 in the limited games he appeared in, it isn’t entirely bad, given you can maintain it for 162 games.
The idea of retirement will loom in the back of Soto’s mind if the Angels opted not to resign him. This would become even more apparent if others teams around the league passed on him as well.
With both Carlos Perez, and Jett Bandy now on the scene, a 2017 re-union with Soto is becoming more unlikely by the day. Although he plays the victim to injuries, very frequent. He simply cannot stay healthy, that’s just the ugly truth. As hard as it is to write a “report-card” for an athlete that just hasn’t had the opportunity to perform, it must be done.
With that being said, I believe it’s highly unlikely we see Soto in an Angels uniform come 2017. Unfortunately, there may never be another team willing to take that shot.
