The Pirates claimed Travis Ishikawa off of waivers last week and while ideally he never would have been designated for assignment in the first place, he understands the business side of baseball very well.

Perhaps he understand it better than most because of his past experiences. The 2015 season has yet to reach the All-Star break and Ishikawa, 31, has already been designated for assignment twice.

“Having been through it now and again, I’ve experienced it so many times in my career that this is a business and they’re making the move that they feel is best for their organization,” Ishikawa told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “You don’t always have to agree with it but you respect it.”

However, now that the Pirates have claimed Ishikawa, the veteran wants to show the organization that they made a smart move.

“Obviously [the Pirates] think enough of me to bring me back in and to make a corresponding move this late in the year,” Ishikawa said. “I definitely want to help repay them and help them win some ballgames.”
