Ignorance is bliss: Nationals' Fister doesn't know score, inning when locked in

When Washington Nationals starter Doug Fister is in the zone, he's completely locked in. So locked in, in fact, that he's oblivious to the things you'd imagine every baseball player is cognizant of while on the diamond.

After throwing seven scoreless innings in the Nationals' 7-0 win over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, Fister gave a glimpse into his mindset while he's locked in and hurling.

"I don't check the score," Fister admitted. "I do not know the exact score and honestly when I'm at my best I have no idea what inning it is."

While it may seem bizarre to fathom a pitcher not being aware of the inning or the score, Fister elaborated that he does so in order to remain focused on the task at hand.

"I really try and stay simple. I want to take things one pitch at a time," the 31-year-old righty said. "If I get into anything bigger than that, then I'm in trouble myself."
