Giants pitchers Cain, Peavy set to make their returns next week

Giants manager Bruce Bochy announced on Tuesday that starters Matt Cain and Jake Peavy would each get one more rehab start in the minors. The information also revealed just enough to surmise who might be coming out of the rotation.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Bochy indicated that one of them would make his return on July 2 at Miami and the other on July 3 when the team is in Washington. Although Bochy did not say who would be coming out of the rotation, the Chronicle points out that the rotation lines up such that Tim Lincecum and Tim Hudson’s turns fall on those days. Bochy said:

“If somebody misses a start and goes to the bullpen, sometimes that’s a good thing. It gives them a break.”

The Chronicle indicates that Hudson might go on the disabled list to rest his ankle and that Lincecum could go into the bullpen like he did last year.

Whoever pitches on July 2 will likely be facing the Marlins ace Jose Fernandez in his return from Tommy John surgery.
