While the opponent may change for the Colorado Rockies on Monday, one thing didn’t. Rockies center fielder and leadoff hitter Charlie Blackmon was out of the starting lineup for the third straight day on Monday with back soreness.

Blackmon has now been out of the starting lineup since Saturday when he was scratched just before a matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks with back tightness. It looks as if he will miss Colorado’s opener against San Francisco at Coors Field on Monday afternoon.

Rookie Raimel Tapia has started three consecutive games in Blackmon’s absence. He has not only taken Chuck Nazty’s leadoff spot in the batting order but also his place in center field. Since being called up on September 2, Tapia has posted a .545 batting average. He has six hits in 11 at-bats and has struck out twice while recording his first stolen base.

He went 2-for-5 on Saturday in his first start of the season. Tapia then followed that with a 3-for-5 performance on Sunday.

Colorado manager Walt Weiss had indicated it was a possibility for Blackmon to be back for Monday’s game. However, a pair of day games on Sunday and Monday and the quick turnaround from Saturday night’s initial injury apparently didn’t help.

On the season, Blackmon is hitting .317 with 23 homers and 67 RBI. He also has 16 stolen bases. He has heated up as the season has gone along, with 11 homers in his last 30 games.

In seven games that August week, Blackmon batted .563 (18-for-32) with 13 runs, two doubles, seven home runs, nine RBI, two walks and one stolen base. The hits, runs, home runs and 42 total bases led the Majors over that span.
